With the large amounts of moisture that has engulfed most of the prairies, nitrogen fertilizer has been on the move. Volitization, leaching, and denitrification losses can add up to some sick plants. Below is a flow chart on how to scout for fertilizer deficient canola plants.

It’s not too late to help these plants through this tough time. You can spread on dry fertilizer, nitrogen or Sulphate; or you can dribble band on liquid. Each option has its pros and cons, if dry hot weather is expected and you are not able to irrigate then liquid dribble banding is the more attractive option as volitization losses will be less substantial.
