Olympic hopeful Team Steve Laycock, based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan has kicked off the 4th annual Decisive Farming CurlingTown presented by Crescent Point Energy. This program strives to promote interest and skill development of the sport of curling in communities across the Canadian prairies.

Local curling clubs located in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba can apply to be chosen to become 1 of the 5 communities to host CurlingTown events. Four of the events will run between December 2015 and January 2016 as after-school junior curling clinics for youth in the community. Team Steve Laycock visits the chosen communities to hold clinics with the support of local community volunteers.

The fifth “grand finale” is a larger event held on a Saturday and includes a junior curling clinic followed by a friendly game between the local champion curling team and Olympic hopeful Team Steve Laycock.

“We designed these events to advance grassroots curling and increase participation in the game that has given us so much,” says Team Steve Laycock’s Kirk Muyres. “We wanted to find a way to give back and grow the game that has allowed us to travel the world, win championships, and challenge ourselves every single day.”

Decisive Farming CurlingTown presented by Crescent Point Energy received numerous applications from excited clubs last season, and attendance at the events ranged from 75-125 youth plus various volunteers and spectators from the surrounding community.

“When a community hosts CurlingTown, we see so many kids show up for the day with smiles from ear to ear and having a tonne of fun. We help the kids get involved in the club at a young age, instilling confidence, work ethic and self-esteem that will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” adds Kirk.

Applications for the Decisive Farming CurlingTown presented by Crescent Point Energy are being accepted through to November 20, 2015. To learn more about the event and application process, visit the Team Steve Laycock Curlingtown webpage.
